Florida Avenue Baptist Church exists to love God and others by helping our community to Discover God's Love, Develop God's Love,
and Demonstrate God's Love.
Each week we offer the opportunity to encounter God through worship, grow with God through Bible Study, and serve God through ministry.
Florida Avenue Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist
congregation that supports and works alongside The Orange Blossom Baptist Association
and the Florida Baptist Convention
We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and is the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and has supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21, 3:15-16; Hebrews 4:12; Revelation 22:19; Jude 3).
We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit; that these are equal and infinitely perfect and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption. (Genesis 1:1; Psalms 90; Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19-20; John 4:24, 10:30).
GOD, THE FATHER
We believe in God, The Father, an infinite personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. (Deuteronomy 33:27; Psalm 104; Mark 12:29-30; John 5:23,26).
We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary; that He lived a sinless life, died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the scriptures, was buried, and arose bodily from the dead and ascended into Heaven where, at the right hand of God the Father, He is now our High Priest and Advocate interceding for His people. We believe He could return at any moment to take believers to Heaven. (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:30-35; John 20:1-9, 14:1-6; Acts 1:9-11; Romans 3:21-26; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Ephesians 1:18-23; Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 Peter 2:21-23, 3:18; 1 John 2:1-2; Revelation 19:11-16, 20:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and that during this age He convicts men of sin, regenerates and seals believers, indwells, guides, instructs, empowers and enables them to live Godly lives and to serve God faithfully. (John 16:7-11, 13-14; Romans 8:9-11; 1 Corinthians 2:10, 3:16, 6:11-20; Ephesians 1:13-14, 5:18).
We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost and under condemnation, and that only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. (Genesis 1:26-28, 3:1-24; Romans 5:12-21, 8:1-11, 14).
We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and that only those who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith are born of the Holy Spirit and thereby become the children of God. (John 3:16; Romans 3:21-24; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 John 5:13).
We believe that Satan is a real supernatural being who rebelled against God, led man into sin, and is today resisting God's plan on earth. Christ judged Satan on the cross, and now believers are to claim Christ's victory over him by resisting him in the power of the Holy Spirit. (Ezekiel 28:12-19; John 8:44, 16:11; Ephesians 6:11-18; Revelation 12:9-11).
A. We believe that the true church is a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head, and is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:22, 3:10, 5:23-20; Colossians 1:18).
B. We believe in the local, visible church of which only those who a part of the true church are eligible for membership. Under the headship of Jesus Christ, the church is to decide and govern its own affairs so as to fulfill the Lord's great commission. (Matthew 28:28-20; Romans 10:9-17; Ephesians 4:7-16).
We believe the Scripture encourages two ordinances for the local church: Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian Baptism by immersion in the Name of the triune God is the acceptable way for the believer to show his identification with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. In this way he give illustrative testimony of death to sin and resurrection to a new life. We believe that the Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ as a memorial service setting forth in a sacred and symbolice manner the purpose of His death. We believe that these two ordinances should be observed and administered by believers until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ, but are not necessary for salvation. (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38, 41; Romans 6:3-4; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32).
We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God, conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, and for the well being of his fellow men. We believe that God has called the Christian to be holy, and therefore his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he is not to be conformed to the world; that he is to demonstrate good works, and abstain from acts and activities which could cause a fellow believer to stumble; that he should be a faithful steward of his gifts, talents, time and possessions; that he should seek for himself and others maturity in Christ. (John 14:23; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:29; Ephesians 2:8-10; Colossians 3:1-2; James 1:21-27; 1 Peter 1:13-16, 2:1-2, 12, 3:15; 2 Peter 3:11-12, 18; 1 John 2:3-6).
We believe that every Christian is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith and conduct; that he is to be sensitive to the effect his life and actions have on other believers, but that he is not to be judged by others, or himself judge others in matters that are not clearly condemned in scripture; that his life is to be motivated by love for other members of the body of Christ as well as those who are outside of the family of God. (1 Corinthians 8:8-13, 13:4-7).
We believe in the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe there will be a final, eternal judgment of God on the unbeliever in Jesus Christ, and on Satan and his angels, and that there will be eternal blessedness for the believer. (Matthew 24:13, 31, 46; Revelation 1:7, 20:6, 11-15, 21:8, 22:3-50).
THE LORD'S DAY
We believe the Lord's Day is the day of Christ's Resurrection, the first day of the week, Sunday. We accept this as our day of assembling ourselves together in worship of our Risen Savior. (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2).
We believe that the local church is autonomous and independent, with full freedom of deliberation, decision and deportment under God, and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority, yet understanding that civil government is of divine appointment for the interest and good order of human society. (Acts 13:1-4, 15:19-31; Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-15, 5:1-4).
